A NOTE FROM AMANDA STURGEON, FAIA

A LETTER FROM THE CEO

As I completed my first full year as CEO of the International Living Future Institute, not a day went by that I wasn’t inspired by the commitment and dedication of our community. In 2016, ILFI continued to scale as we saw our programs, network and staff grow steadily. Despite challenging politics, our network continues to work diligently toward a Living Future we all know is possible.

We celebrated 17 new Living Building Challenge certified projects, including the Chesapeake Bay Brock Environmental Center that achieved full Living Building Certification. The program continued to grow in national attention with Etsy's pursuit of certification for their headquarters in Brooklyn, NY. Their interest is a showcase of their commitment to creating healthy and sustainable spaces. We saw projects from residential homes in Oregon to environmental learning centers in Virginia demonstrate that the Living Building Challenge is achievable at multiple building scales and types, and in a variety of regions.

In just the second year of operating the Living Product Challenge, we saw the first ever certified products which proves that manufacturers can create products that are healthy, inspirational and give back to the environment. Declare continued to rapidly gain momentum with nearly 500 labels distributed in 2016. We also began to further expand Declare beyond North America with our first official international partner organization in New Zealand.

Our storytelling mediums continued to pave the way in an ever-changing digital world. We significantly redesigned our website in order to further enable people to feel engaged, empowered and inspired to join the regenerative design community and challenge the norm. We published four Ecotone titles that provide examples of the people and projects that make up the regenerative design community.

The stories that make up our work also garnered media attention along the way and have been mentioned in many national media publications including the Guardian, Fast Company, the Huffington Post, PBS and much more. The continued uptick of ILFI’s work is a testament of the power of this movement. I believe that we, as a movement, will continue to gain even more momentum and I look forward to leading us toward an even stronger Living Future.
