Designed as a neighboring expansion of the Hummingbird Wholesale Stellaria Building near downtown Eugene, the Mahonia building is a simple and cost effective example of how a mix of warehouse, production, and office spaces can be sustainable and support positive interaction between tenants.

Day-lit and passively ventilated, the exterior walls are comprised of straw bales finished with earth-plaster for a natural, well insulated, and ecologically responsible structure. These locally procured straw bales were installed in a workshop setting by community members, and the building also incorporates a variety of reused materials including siding, flooring, windows, doors, light fixtures, railings and repurposed urbanite block. Mahonia’s roof includes photovoltaic panels which in conjunction with a solar hot water system limit the building’s consumption of energy.
