Two-Part Certification

Two-Part Certification

Two-Part Certification

As a performance-based standard, some of the Imperatives’ requirements can only be evaluated after a project is fully completed and operational for at least twelve consecutive months. As of May 2012, however, project teams pursuing ‘Living’ status (version 2.0 or newer) may opt to undergo a separate preliminary audit to receive a conditional assessment of those Imperatives whose requirements are less likely to be impacted by the operational phase. The preliminary audit may take place any time after construction is complete, and relies on the review of written elements and a site visit by the auditor.

The following table identifies which Imperatives are eligible for preliminary audit and which require an audit after the 12-month performance period.

*If a project is using I11-E2 Surplus Renewable Energy to contribute to the required quantity of carbon offsets, this Imperative must be deferred until the Final Audit. Actual measured surplus energy must be used in these calculations rather than modeled surplus energy.

The preliminary audit ruling does not constitute Petal Certification; that is only possible when three complete Petals have been achieved, one of which is either water, energy or materials. It is intended simply to give the team assurance that the Imperatives reviewed are in compliance with the requirements. The ruling on each Imperative will be carried forward to the final audit. However, if teams have completed work on the project that involved the use of new materials, an additional materials tracking sheet should be submitted outlining the materials used listing compliance with for Red List, Responsible Industry, and Appropriate Sourcing/Living Economy Sourcing.

The preliminary audit follows the same certification process as a regular audit, including a site visit.

For most projects, the same auditor will perform both reviews, although this cannot be guaranteed. The site visit will occur during final audit. The final review will involve a ruling by the auditor for certification.
